Abhinav Kumar (MIT) - Lattices, codes and potential energy: some geometric optimization problems

Abstract:
Finding the densest packing of (congruent, non-overlapping) spheres in space or the densest packing of caps on the surface of a sphere are classical and important problems in pure and applied mathematics. They are also connected to the natural question of energy minimization in mathematical physics. I will describe some recent results toward exact solutions (in many cases) for these optimization problems.
