Course Description

This is the first of a two term sequence in class field theory. Whatever we do not get to this
term will be included next term. The goal for these two courses is to cover the following topics:
local fields, adeles and ideles, local class field theory, global class field theory (in terms of ideals and adeles), Brauer groups, applications to L-functions, and possibly some basic Iwasawa theory.

This course will pick up where Ma 160a left off and as such the only prerequisites are Ma 160a as well
as a good knowledge of fields and Galois theory. If you did not take Ma 160a but would like to take these courses please see me
beforehand.

The grading policy will be decided somewhat democratically the first day of class. Attendance will be a factor in final grades, along with possibly some homework problems or a short paper.
