Course Description

This course is designed to satisfy the Caltech core writing requirement.

Students are to write a mathematical paper (perhaps 10 pages or more) with the help of a faculty mentor and the advice of the instructor.

The paper must be on some technical topic in mathematics, and must include definitions, equations, and theorems. It may be a research paper or an expository one at a level understandable by advanced undergraduates. Papers are to be in the style of a journal article, with title page, section headings, and references. It is expected that students will use the TeX (or LaTeX) typesetting program.

Deadlines for the Term:

Monday, April 9 is the due date for a one or two page outline of the planned writing project, including topic and scope, the name of mentor who has agreed to help, and some references. Students must then meet with the instructor sometime this week, at least briefly, to discuss their outline and project.

Monday, April 23 is the due date for a partial draft of your paper including (1) an abstract, (2) an introductory section, (3) the proposed section headings, (4) all or part of at least one of your sections, at least a full page, and (5) the tentative list of references. See the email of April 10 for more details.

Monday, May 7 is the due date for a complete draft. Also at this time, I want a report on whether the mentor has seen the paper. Comments will be made and the papers returned to the students by Friday, May 12.

Monday, May 21 is the due date for the final version of paper, on which the grade will be based.

Policies

Grades will be based upon the written paper. Tardiness will be taken into account.

A few class meetings will be scheduled at a time or times determined at the organizational meeting. Watch for email announcements. The instructor will be available by email and office hours. Do not hesitate to consult, particularly in the early stages of the writing project.

Mentors may be faculty and postdoctoral fellows in mathematics, applied mathematics, or related fields.  It is the student's responsibility to find a mentor, but the instructor will be glad to discuss possibilities.

Mathematical Writing [pdf]

This is the manuscript about math and CS writing that Donald Knuth and two co-authors used in a course at Stanford.  Some of the material in the early parts is very important.
