Text:  Dummit and Foote, Abstract Algebra, Second Edition, Prentice Hall, 1999. Class lectures will sometimes cover slightly different material and often cover material from a different point of view.

Prerequisite:  Freshmen must have instructor's permission to register.

Topics:  Ma 5a will be devoted to the study of groups. We will begin with the definition, examples, and basic properties of groups. We study subgroups and homomorphisms, permutation groups, and semidirect products. Sylow's Theorem will be proved and we will explore some of its consequences.

Grades:  Roughly 40% Homework 60%, 30% Midterm, and 30% Final

Homework Policy:  Students may work together on homework as long as each student writes up their own homework in their own words.

At most one late homework set will be accepted, and except in unusual circumstances, only if arrangements have been made with me in advance. Other than in exceptional circumstances, homework will not be accepted more than a week after the deadline.
