Course Objective: This
course aims to be an accessible introduction to the theory of elliptic curves,
which will begin with some historical material, and then define the group law.
We will then prove some useful and interesting theorems on elliptic curves over
number fields and finite fields, and then give some applications, such as
Diophantine equations and cryptographic uses of elliptic curves. Prerequisite:
Ma
5, Ma 7, or equivalent at instructor's discretion Text: The class
text will be Rational Points on Elliptic Curves by Silverman and Tate. Grading Policy: There will be weekly homeworks and a final examination. These will each be worth 50% of the final mark
